Local walking routes

The Porlock Visitor Centre is run by The Porlock Tourist Association and can be found in the old school building at the junction where the Porlock Weir road meets the main road at the bottom of the hill. Organised walks guided by park rangers take place regularly, starting out from here. Particularly worth joining on a pleasant summer’s evening is the walk up over Ley Hill, south of the village in search of wild red deer, while another good woodland walk is from Porlock Weir up to Culbone Church, a structure that makes claim to be the smallest church in the whole of England.

The area surrounding Porlock features everythingthat a keen walker could be looking for, starting with the long shingle bank that curves across the Bay. On one side it is adjacent to the rugged Hurlstone Point that leads up to Selworthy Beacon and Bossington Hill, while on the other it is bordered by steep wooded hills overlooking the seaup to the picturesque Culbone Church. Inland from the coast is wild sea marshland, followed by old fashioned farmland. From here it is only a short amble to the steep-sided wooded, streamed valleys of Horner Water, East Water and Hawkcombe, and beyond to the equally wild moorland tors, all crowned by Dunkery Beacon, the highest hill on Exmoor.

Numerous well maintained and sign-posted footpaths exist, all looked after by the National Trust and the national park. Walkers additionally have a good variety of excellent refreshment stops to choose from in the village of Porlock itself, as well as in most of the old attractive hamlets that surround.

Nowhere in England can there be found a more perfect centre for walking enthusiasts. Visitors could comfortably spend an enjoyable week’s holiday here without ever resorting to using a car or public transport.

A full range of illustrated guides to local walks, Ordinance Survey maps and information on all Ranger-led walks canbe found at the Porlock Visitor Centre.
